Remembering the 'consummate teammate'

Former Sioux player Perry Nakonechny dies at age 47
"He was the glue that held us together."

Former UND men's hockey player Perry Nakonechny, who also went on to coach at Grand Forks Red River High School, died Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 47. (Submitted photo)

UND captured the NCAA national hockey title in 1987. Many believe that team, known as the Hrkac Circus, was the best in school history.

Perry Nakonechny was a member of that 1987 team. He may not have received as many headlines as Tony Hrkac or Bob Joyce, but the Dauphin, Man., native was a driving force in the team’s national championship.

“He was the glue that held us together,” said Jeff Bowen, a 1987 teammate.

Nakonechny died Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 47.

The former Sioux player who later coached hockey at Grand Forks Red River High School was remembered as a great teammate and even a greater family man by those who played with him.

Nakonechny played for UND from 1983-87 and also spent six seasons coaching Red River hockey, three of them as the head coach.

“He was the consummate teammate,” said former Sioux player Brad Berry, now an assistant coach with the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets. “When there was adversity or when times were tense, he found ways to make light of the situation. But he also knew when to be serious at the right time. He was the settling influence in the locker room.

“The biggest thing about Perry is that he always gave, but never took.”

And he gave to his family first and foremost.

Scott Koberinski, another former teammate, recalls a heart-warming family moment in 2005 when hockey great Wayne Gretzky — known as The Great One — made an appearance at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Nakonechny’s son, Tyler, who has cerebral palsy, had the opportunity to shake hands with Gretzky.

“Someone said, ‘Tyler, wasn’t it great to shake hands with The Great One?’ ” Koberinski said. “But Perry chimed in, ‘No, Mr. Gretzky should be honored to meet my “Great One.”

“Tyler was the Great One in Perry’s eyes. That was really touching. Perry always put his family first.”

Nakonechny also put his players first when he coached at Red River. He served as an assistant from 1987-90 before taking over in 1990.

“He expected a lot from his kids, but he treated everyone the same,” said Tarek Howard, another of Nakonechny’s teammates. “He was a very good mentor. More important, he was an incredible father.”

His former UND coach, Gino Gasparini, said Nakonechny put his teammates first, as well.

“Perry was just a wonderful player to have on your team,” Gasparini said. “He may not have been blessed with the most skill compared to others, but he had the heart, determination and personality that melded with everybody.

“On great teams, there are those guys that create team chemistry. And Perry was one of those guys who fit into that category. He had both feet on the ground. He worked hard, had great values and knew what had to be done.

“I don’t know if anyone has been dealt the cards Perry was dealt, but I don’t know of anyone who met that challenge with such grace and determination. He really touched a lot of people.”

His former teammates also remembered the lighter side of Nakonechny.

“He was a jokester, too,” Howard said. “When we came in as freshmen in 1983, there were 10 of us. And Perry was the only one who had a car. He had us doing little tasks for him just to get a ride. He was pretty funny.”

Nakonechny, who was a Grand Forks School District technology coordinator, battled cancer to the end.

Recently, a golf tournament was held in his honor in Grand Forks. His former teammates and others associated with Sioux hockey attended the event.

Nakonechny made a brief appearance at the tournament.

“He was just wonderful to be around and to have him at that tournament, although it was brief, meant a lot,” Koberinski said. “It was his way of saying he appreciated everything and that he’d keep battling.

“He was a dear friend, and he’ll be missed.”

Nakonechny played four years for the Sioux. The four-year letterwinner played in 144 career games. The winger scored 27 goals and added 38 assists.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Mickie, daughter Brenna and son Tyler.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Forks, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family, with visitation one hour before the service.

Dozens of ways to win at the GF fair this year

The Greater Grand Forks Fair & Exhibition will have all the attractions Midwesterners expect from their local fair: carnival rides, 4-H exhibits, pie and ice cream socials, a free stage with entertainment, a circus thrill show, racing pigs and more.

But if you don’t mind competing for cash and prizes, you could walk away from the fair with a little money and/or some gifts, as well.

There will be more than two dozen contests during the five days of the fair, Wednesday through June 27 at the Grand Forks County fairgrounds, north of Gateway Drive and west of North Washington Street. Gate admission will be free. Here are a few of the ways you could win cash and prizes.

- The Indigo Top Model competition will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Exhibit Hall Stage. Contestants ages 12 to 24 will be judged on fashion creativity, style and stage presence. Choose your favorite clothing to model to compete for the chance to be Grand Forks Fair’s first Top Model winner. You can download an application at www.grandforksfair.com. Indigo, a funky chic boutique in University Village that sells gently used designer women’s and men’s clothes, is the main sponsor. Prizes include gift certificates and more.

- The Rock 30 Games Guitar Hero Tournament will be at 3 p.m. Friday with three levels of competition and head-to-head matches. All ages are welcome. Preregister by noon Thursday (the registration form is at www.grandforksfair.com) by dropping off the registration at Rock 30 Games, 3221 32nd Ave. S., Suite 200.

- Got muscles? Enter the Ironworks Gym Fitness Center Arm Wrestling Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. You can register from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday; it’s $10 per arm, $5 per additional arm. For information, call Jake, (701) 278-2611.

- Then, there are the eating contests, sponsored by Hugo’s. The corn-on-the-cob-eating contest will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The bubblegum-blowing contest will be at 4 p.m. Thursday and the hot-dog-eating contest at 8 p.m. Thursday. Friday at 5:30 p.m. there will be a pie-eating contest. The cookie-stacking contest is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and the Shuck Off corn-shucking contest will be at 1 p.m. June 27.

- The Behl’s Photography Parent/Child Look-A-Like Contest. Come get your photo taken at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. You could win a family photo session and an 11-by-14 portrait valued at $175.

- Like dodgeball? Get together a four-person team (ages 16 and older, men and women) and enter the Rock 94.7 Dodgeball Tournament at 4 p.m. Thursday. There’s no entry fee, and the deadline to register is Monday. Go to www.grandforksfair.com for rules and registration info. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, and there’s a $100 prize for the team with the most creative team costumes.

Then, there’s the Lite Rock 104 Minute to Win It Game Show at 7 p.m. Wednesday; a Straw Bale Toss Competition at 4 p.m. Thursday; the XL 93 Deal or No Deal Game Show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday; a Rooster Crowing Contest at 9 a.m. Friday; the Weird People Tricks contest at 4:30 p.m. Saturday; a Lip Sync Contest at 2 p.m. Sunday; not mention Family Bingo, Bessie Bingo, hula hoop contests, sack racing, jump roping and more. The carnival midway will be open from 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, 3 to 11 p.m. Thursday, 3 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. June 27. A carnival ride Mega Pass is $40 if purchased by Tuesday, and is good for all rides every day. Purchased during the fair, it will be $45. The Daily Pass is $10 in advance, $25 at the fairgrounds.

Grandstand events will be of the loud, testosterone-heavy variety: Racing Friday night, the TNT Monsters Steel Thunder Tour monster trucks and motocross Saturday, and the Demo Derby and Herbie Derby on Sunday. Admission will be charged for the events.

The free entertainment includes Garcia Brothers Circus Thrill Show, featuring the Human Cannon Ball and the Globe of Death, with free shows at 6, 7:30 and 9:15 p.m. Wednesday; 5:45, 7:15 and 9 p.m. Thursday; 4, 7 and 9:15 p.m. Friday; 4, 6:30, 8:15 and 9:45 p.m. Saturday; and 1:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 8 p.m. June 27.

Daryl’s Racing Pigs, another free show, will race at 3:30, 4:45, 5:45 and 8 p.m. Friday; 4:45, 5:45, 7:15 and 9 p.m. Saturday; and 2, 3, 4 and 5 p.m. June 27.

There will be musical entertainment and more on the Free Stage.

A celebration for senior citizens will begin at 3 p.m. Friday in the 4-H Building with free pie and ice cream, coffee and music, sponsored by Cass Clay.

On Military Appreciation Day Thursday, there will be free carnival rides from 5 to 7 p.m. for military, active duty and retired, with ID.
